Fanfiction Rec Week Day 5
Aug. 25th, 2006 10:30 amSick isn't fun by a long-stretch. But fortunately I'm getting better. Somewhat. But enough of that, let's get to the rec today!
Today's subject material may be offensive for all parties intended and justfully so, cause today is the day we look at the Genre of Train Wreck. That's right, I said Train Wreck. What is a Train Wreck you might ask? Well put simply it's a fiction that you just cannot look away from despite it being so horribly bad. They suck you in like some kind of overgrown vaccum and holds onto with the tenacity of an eechi tentatcled beast.
There are some fics that you just cannot stop reading and these are the best of all of them. Brace yourselves people, this ain't no Probability Flux.
Jeffrey "Oneshot" Wong is one of the first and formost writers of the whole Train Wreck scenario, generating this type of response with his series such as Just Won't Die and it's Super!Ranma tendencies, and Usagi's Usual Morning with the rampant lesbianism and subsequent incestual squick. Today however we're looking at one of the Just Won't Die stories entitled Just Won't Die Naruto.
In Just Won't Die Naruto, we meet a Ranma Saotome, returned to his eighteen year old body after being coined as being over a hundred and lacking a lot of his powers, including Being God. I am NOT kidding with this. Apparently if you follow the extremely long stories of Just Won't Die, Ranma Saotome has become God, before passing said title over to Skuld. Naruto "Summons" Ranma even though said Saotome was headed to the Evangelion Universe with the use of the Namban Mirror, a convenient plot device of Animated Canon, and takes Naruto under his wing.
Some of the good points here is that Itachi is still rather badass and picks up all of Ranma's tricks once he uses them against said Uchiha, as well as Naruto not picking up a move such as the Mokou Takabisha right off the bat. Other hard things to swallow is Ranma and company taking out the Akatsuki. It's one of the mixed bag feelings because while it is a very good story, it's also a horrifying Train Wreck in slow motion.
The second author I'd like to point out has archived his fics onto F.net and is known as either AnimeAddiction or Hung Nguyen. Although for some stupid reason, you can't find him under Hung no matter how much you search. Fancy that. The reason being part of the Train Wreck Gang is that this guy has quite the Anti-Akane semantic and from what I gather has a figure in his life that he associates Miss Tendo onto. Bitch? Please.
The fic I'd like to point out for this is none other than his famous Fist of the Pikachu which is quite obviously a crossover between Pokemon and Ranma 1/2. Another Godly!Ranma as such as the fandom is known for, though not to the extent as say Tekkadread which takes everything sacred about Vandread and mixes it with Super!Ranma. I'd think if he did something Fullmetal Alchemist, Ryan would tear him a new spleen hole.
Why I like this? I HONESTLY DO NOT KNOW. The writing is sound, but the premise is overblown at times. It's almost painful at times to read, and yet I follow it like a Rabid Chihuahua following a Taco Bell Truck on Godzilla. It's like seeing a Train Wreck followed by Super!Ranma's where ever you go. Something about this author has sucked me into his writings and I don't think it's his Anti-Akane bias.
The third one actually found a home on the C2, as it was one of those Train Wrecks that insisted on me reading it, no matter how insane or bad it was. I'm referring to KatSumeragi1313 and her fic The Not So Grand Summoner which is a Demyx and Org XIII fic. Somehow, somewhere it sucked me in and grasped me with meat-hooks.
I couldn't really say why I like this fic. Somehow it was like a Train Wreck that kept replaying over and over in my eyes. Maybe it was the addition of Auron that cinched it, or that Demyx was the main lead of the story. Or maybe it was Cerberus. The Walking Drool Factory is always a plus anyhow. Either the reason, it earned a place on my C2.
I suppose I should end on a note that creates havok amidst the fans. When I started writing ELEMENT, there was only a select few fics in the W.I.T.C.H. section that interested me. One of these was a Super!Harry fic written by Shadow Crystal Mage entitled Harry Potter: Keeper of the Dark Heart. You can't get much Super!Harry than this kiddies, honest to GOD. Keeper of a Heart Artefact that is on par with the Heart of Kandrakar and created by the Lover of Xing Jing, a female nymph (Yes You Heard Me, Tar Be Rampant Lesbianism Here), and he doesn't have to share it.
Honestly, I think this is the fiction that inspired the drive to write ELEMENT. Without it, I wouldn't have avoided every ficcery pratfall known to mankind while reading this fiction. I admit it sucked me in and I couldn't stop reading it till it was done. Train Wreck people, I tell you.
Train Wrecks deserve a genre of their own. We've seen them in Movies, Television and now fandoms as well. Hell, books have Train Wrecks too. Just listen to stuff from Penny Arcade when Gabe begins to read stuff with quotes such as "Who dares enter the lair of the evil space bitches?"
Flu clearing up. Might be 100% by Sunday.
