Fanfiction Rec Week Day 4
Aug. 24th, 2006 08:12 amWhile I'm terribly sick, I just had to do this to try and lift my spirits. I suppose Fever Dreams are a trade off when working on a genre such as Yuri.
What is Yuri for example? In the classic sense, people have used this word to denote female x female relationships while the more popular Yaoi is used to denote male x male relationships. While many series have classic canon relationships such as this, most notably Gravitation and Card Captor Sakura, the word Yuri doesn't really have a denotation besides a name itself. It sort of just popped out of nowhere.
For the sake of arguement, I'm going to use the term shojo-ai which means beautiful girl love. Cheesy, but good.
The first author on our list is the man of a 100 fictions, Al Kristopher. Long since retired from the fanfiction scene since F.net was being a pansy and things were being stolen, he is the author of numerous fics in the Final Fantasy, Sukoiden and even Samurai Jack areas. The fic we're looking at today is A Soul of Silicon which is a Xenosaga fiction with very slight Shion x KOS-MOS overtones. Touching on the story of Prometheus, Shion is bound between wondering if KOS-MOS is truly real, or if everything is programmed. She comes to a conclusion that KOS-MOS has a soul, and which is remarkable since the character of KOS-MOS in Xenosaga has such a wonderful role and destiny.
The second fiction I'm going to look at is from the W.I.T.C.H. fandom and the author known as Racewing has been one of the video game fanfiction authors. A linkable to his webpage has many such fics, and while I can't exactly link to one of my favourites on the site for adult material, I'll have to make due with one of my cheesy in-the-closet relationships that I love so much and yet would get lynched at times for: Will x Irma. The story Excuses is a light shojou-ai fluffy fic that develops a relationship between the two Guardians. Written in-character and quite silly at best, it's got a wonderful overall feel to the fiction. And let's face it; even to someone who does enjoy a good canonship, this one reads "Warm and Fluffy" all over it.
While our third author is undoubtably guilty of the Super!Harry fandom, (and what person hasn't dabbled in one of those either they be silly or serious), Shadow Crystal Mage has written an off-the-wall Naruto Shojou-ai fiction entitled Sakura's Harem. A random encounter with Desire of the Endless has just transformed the life of Haruno Sakura into a harem anime, with all of the WOMEN pining for her. The repercussions are great and terrifying for certain parties, and for once, Naruto isn't an outcast anymore! Though the most classic statement is probably Hinata wanting both Naruto and Sakura. Priceless, hilarious and downright amazing.
I'd write down more, but good Shojou-ai is hard to come by, especially in a Yaoi-soaked place such as F.net. That and I've been sneezing like a madman. I think I need a squeegie for my screen now. Eew.
