For many a year we've been experiencing video games that have a clear goal in mind. Either you A) Slay the dragon, B) pilot Kratos to killing all of the Olympian Gods, C) Raid Tombs and therefore are interested in the concept of Tomb Raiding and D) Get served softserve videogame versions of a book/movie/novel adaptation that doesn't quite live up to the hype.
We're looking at a potential E) with the release of
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 as it demonstrates that you can do dark and gritty with a T rating for Harry Potter and yet manage to make it appeal to the gamers who both not only love the game but also
love cover systems in their third person shooters.
This is not your average Harry Potter game by far. Gone are the days of wandering through the magical place you call Hogwarts, sneaking through Diagon Alley and getting into trouble with Hermione and Ron. This is a game that you are tasked with rocking motherfuckers across the board, shooting spells that will slam into them with total impunity and enjoy yourself if you decide to indulge in a Crucio. Yes, Harry has that too. Apparently though? There's a achievement for letting the Crucio slide and only allowing Voldemort use it.
All of the classic Potter spells are there with a little tweaking here and there to make them more combat worthy. Expellimaris doesn't just disarm, it incapacitates like portrayed in the movie when you rock that guy in there. Beams of light blast into the opponent in the aptly remarked "Machine-gun fire spells". This is the HP gamers and fans alike have been waiting for, and by god lets hope it doesn't disappoint.
Penny Arcade has done a comic on this, both prophetic with the next installment, and downright pants-wettingly funny. At the same time, I'm here trying to wake up my brother cause A) he has to go get his INR taken, and B) he's got to see this trailer. I mean, c'mon, a T-rated game? Harry Potter? This isn't your kidlet who at the age of 11 wandered into Hogwarts and argued with the Sorting Hat. This is a Harry, charged with finding the remaining Horcruxes and rocking death eaters, inferi and beasts alike. You have magical shields, you have spells, you have patronuses and you have Ron and Hermione.
Leave the scarf at home Harry, this is the big leagues.
