Tsurugi - Naruto Fic
A little bit of the beginning. I'm planning on making it one big block, not a multi-chapter.

=====
"YOU FAIL!"
The words run true and throughout the campus as Naruto sighed and rubbed his head. "Yeah yeah, can't I go now Iruka-sensei?"
Iruka fumed at the lack of concern the young boy had for the important test that he had failed, AGAIN, for the third time. "Come now Iruka," said Mizuki, the second examiner of the school and fellow Chuunin teacher. "He did two bunshin and while they're not quite the standard bunshin..."
"Mizuki," said Iruka, rubbing the bridge of his nose tiredly, "he did two bunshin but they're completely useless in battle! He put more detail into that SWORD of his than his bunshin themselves!"
Glancing at his failed bunshin, Naruto shrugged. The pair were sprawled out on the ground, looking limp, pale and otherwise anatomically incorrect. The only thing that was realistic was the huge massive sword that sat next to each bunshin, grasped limply in a gnarled hand. "Well, the sword works, right?"
"That's not the POINT!" exclaimed Iruka. "Sorry Naruto, but you fail again."
Naruto shrugged, grinned and said, "Hey Iruka-sensei, you wanna see that cool sword trick Tan-nai-san showed me?"
"Just get going Naruto!" shouted Iruka, obviously at his wits end. Naruto grinned and headed out, earning an amused glance from Mizuki.
=====
"Hey, Naruto." Naruto looked up at Shikamaru who was leaning on the side of the doorjam. "I see you didn't pass. Won't Tan-nai-san be upset?"
"Naw, you don't have to be a ninja to weild a sword," smirked Naruto and Shikamaru sighed out a soft "How troublesome" under his breath. "Besides, I doubt anyone would want me on a team with my grades."
"Yeah, I guess so," sighed Shikamaru. "Hey, we're going to go to the Barbeque with Chouji in an hour or two. Want to join us?"
"Ugh, as long as I get to bring Tenten-nee with me. I don't think I could survive with Ino proclaiming that she passed to everyone." Sure enough, the girl was celebrating loudly and was in some sort of arguement with Haruno Sakura. "Want to meet up at Training Ground Seven later afterwards? I wanna show you this new cool skill that Tan-nai-papa showed me."
A faint smile graced Shikamaru's lips. He had always enjoyed seeing Naruto's latest trick of the day with that monsterous sword of his. When it came to using it, there was no one better in the Leaf. "Sure, why not?"
=====
"Ah, Chouji that's mine!" exclaimed Ino, stabbing at the meat frantically. "And they're not cooked either! Shikamaru say something!"
"Feh, troublesome," snorted Shikamaru and earned the Yamanaka death-glare for his trouble. "Oi, Chouji, slow down."
"I'm just hungry from today's test," said Chouji in between bites. "Naruto you didn't pass today?"
"Naw, I figure what's the use since Old-Man Hokage doesn't like me using Tsurugi in public," said Naruto, shaking his head. "I love that sword, and I'm not giving it up for anything, not even to become a ninja."
"But as a ninja you can carry Tsurugi everywhere," reasoned Ino. She, like the rest of Naruto's little squad of friends had known about the blonde's strange facination with the gigantic blade that even Maito Gai, foremost taijutsu expert had trouble lifting. "Why wouldn't you want to pass?"
"It's because my little brother here focuses on nothing BUT the sword," said Tenten, knuckling her hand into Naruto's head. "He never pays attention, never does homework, and all he does is practice with Tsurugi anyhow."
"Oi oi, Tan-nai-papa loves the fact that I use the sword. He said he never got this much entertainment in a weapons specialist since Shirunai Genma," protested Naruto, completely missing Chouji sneak his meat out from under his chopsticks. "He said there hasn't been a pure mono-weapon fighter in Konoha for years now."
"But at least learn the basics," said Ino, jabbing her chopsticks at a piece of brocolli that was simmering on the coals. "You don't see Shikamaru not knowing his stuff, as lazy as he is."
"Loud woman," grunted Shikamaru, getting a piece of carrot flicked at his face by a steaming Ino.
"Why don't you ask Iruka-sensei if you can take the test again," pointed out Chouji. "There's got to be a precident. I mean didn't Rock Lee pass on specialty alone?"
"Hmmm, he has a point," said Tenten. "Okay little bro, you're going to beg Iruka-sensei for a promotion to Genin if you like it or not."
"Awwwww, but I'm sure he'll say no."
======
"Sounds like a good idea," said Iruka, getting a shocked expression from Naruto and a smirk from the rest of the group assembled at the door to his house. "Rock Lee DID pass on specialty alone, so I'm certain I can arrange a test for you later on. I'll let the Hokage know and then we'll set up a testing phase."
"Can you give me a hint on what it's about?" inquired Naruto.
"Nope, that's part of the specialty test: to test your specialty." Iruka grinned, a feral smirk that only a few had seen when he gave out a fairly hard exam. "Okay Naruto, wait for a messenger first thing tomorrow morning from the Hokage's office. We'll set up the test then."
