Some Sickday Madness

Even though I feel terrible, I just had to do this as soon as I watched some Jake Long.

Element: Reunion

Written by Shaun Garin

The Scenarios of Element belongs to me although the characters depicted in W.I.T.C.H., Xiaolin Showdown and Avatar: The Last Airbender belong to their respective creators (Disney, Warner Bros. Animation and Nickelodeon), and American Dragon Jake Long belongs to Disney as well. The Life and Times of Juniper Lee belongs to Cartoon Network.

“You’re going on a trip, grandma?” asked Hay Lin as her grandmother Yan Lin packed a few things into her small wheeled suitcase. “Where to?”

“Oh, just visiting friends,” replied Yan Lin. The elderly woman was grinning widely and she added, “You seem concerned.”

“Well this IS sort of abrupt,” said Hay Lin, rubbing the arm where the Soul of Gravity was worn. “Are you at least telling me who you’re visiting?”

“Well,” started Yan Lin but there was a honking sound from the street below. “Oh, that’s my ride.”

Locking her suitcase in, Hay Lin helped her grandma bring her things down to where a Chinese woman sat on an idling motorcycle. “About time, Yan,” said the woman. “Oooh, is this your granddaughter? She’s pretty.”

“But of course,” smiled Yan Lin. “Jasmine, this is Hay Lin. Hay Lin, Jasmine.”

“Call me Ah-mah,” said Jasmine, pushing her goggles up to her forehead. “You about ready to go, Yan? This get together isn’t going to last forever. I heard that old Lao is bringing his grandson along with him.”

“Oh ho?” said Yan Lin, turning to her granddaughter. “Perhaps you should meet Lao’s grandson, Hay Lin.”

“Grandma!” protested Hay Lin. “I’m sort of dating Rai now…”

“Pish, you’re still young. Besides, I heard Fung is bringing along the Team Leader…” trailed off Yan Lin, making the younger pause in thought. “If you want, I’ve already cleared it with your family and the school…”

“You were planning on this, weren’t you?” said Hay Lin and Jasmine rolled her eyes before revving the cycle once. “Give me a moment!”

“Ah, kids.” Sighed Jasmine. “So I see she’s a Guardian now. It’s been a while since we had one in our neck of the woods. I think June will have fun spending time with a girl who can relate to her problems.”

Yan Lin chuckled and then she checked the side car. “Is that going to be able to fit the three of us?”

“Well, you CAN always skip ahead, or wait for Fung to pick someone up. It’s only an hours drive to Orchid Bay…”

Just then Hay Lin barged out of the house with a bag behind her. She was also waving a cell phone in her hands. “Mom and dad gave me a cell phone, grandma! They’re also going to take care of Mr. Huggles!”

“Mr. Huggles?” inquired Jasmine and Yan Lin grinned.

“The most destructive dormouse in the history of mankind,” said Yan. The pair strapped their bags to the back of the cycle and while Yan got into the sidecar, Hay Lin was regulated to riding behind Jasmine.

“I can’t believe you got time off school to go on this trip,” said Spud, shaking his head. “Considering your grades are self-destructing…”

“I know, but grandfather insisted. And the school in retaliation dropped at least a month’s worth of homework on me.” said Jake, indicating the pile of schoolbooks that were concealed in his overly large bag. “If you need anything, call me.”

“We’ll be fine,” said Trixie. “Besides, didn’t your grandpa say that you had a way to get back instantly?”

“That, I’m not too sure about,” replied Jake, rubbing his head in thought. “Grandfather’s being really vague about how we’re going to get here. He said we had to meet the person who’s picking us up here in the airport, but we have no tickets.”

Spud let out a “oooh eee ooooh eeee” from the Twilight Zone and Trixie elbowed him. “Seriously though, how’ll you know who the guy is?”

“I think that tipped me off right there,” pointed out Trixie, indicating the young man who stood near a pillar and holding onto a sign that read “American Dragon”. “If it weren’t your grandpa doing this thing, I’d think he’d be setting up a trap.”

Gathering his courage, Jake wandered over to the dour looking young man. He had short cropped hair and was dressed in a red shirt and shorts, belaying the temperature that was usually common in New York at that moment in time. His left side of his face however was marked with a terrible burn, but it wasn’t fresh by any means. “Er… hello? You’re looking for the American Dragon?”

“That’s right,” said the young man and Jake was surprised to hear his voice coming from the young man. “Are you Jake Long?”

“Er… yes?”

“Zuko. Where is your grandfather? We need to go.”

“Hmmm… very tricky.” A hand came down and it tapped the board slightly. The dealer handed him a card and the elderly man peered at them. “Again,” he said and the dealer dealt him one. “I stand.”

“Very well.” Flipping over his card, the dealer said, “House draws on sixteen.” Revealing a Jack of Spades, the pug dog dealer raised both floppy eyebrows. “Heavens to Betsy, laddie! Yuir won again?”

“It is not as different as a game played in my world,” replied the human player. “Twenty.”

“That was so cool,” intoned Ray Ray who was lying on his stomach, watching the pair play it out. “This is like the twenty billionth time you got beat Monroe!”

“Ach laddie, it’s all about knowing what comes next,” scowled the pug, pushing his chips over to Iroh. Currently the elderly ex-general had ten pieces of snack foods next to him while Monroe’s pile was dipped to three. Ray Ray declined to play simply because he preferred to see Monroe be humiliated. “I think we need to find a better game than Blackjack, aye?”

“Well we’ve exhausted every game thus far,” said Ray Ray. “Say, where’s June anyhow?”

“She said she had business in the park,” replied Iroh, dealing and shuffling once more. “Her bracelet flashed.”

“And ye dinnae bother to tell us?!” exclaimed Monroe, leaping to his feet. “She could be hurt, or injured or…!”

The dog was abruptly cut off as June slunk into the house, covered in thick green slime. “June!”

“Awesome, you’re covered in boogers!” laughed Ray Ray and June restrained the urge to throttle her little brother.

“This is so not cool,” grumbled June as she grabbed the keys for the shed and squished out. “Lemme know the INSTANT someone comes up the walk.”

Soon the sound of running water could be heard throughout the house and a quick yelp of “Ah, cold!” could be heard from outside. Inside the house, a portal ripped itself open and through it came Zuko, followed by Jake and his grandfather Lao.

Zuko sniffed and made a face. “What’s that smell?”

“June came trudging in here covered in boogers!” laughed Ray Ray. “It was so awesome, Zuko!”

Zuko raised an eyebrow as Jake and Lao reoriented themselves from the instant transport. Putting the Golden Tiger Claws aside and out of reach of Ray Ray, he added, “This is Jake and…”

“Lao, good to see you again,” greeted Iroh, sitting up fully.

“Iroh, it is good to see you again too,” and the elderly men shared a warm hug.

“You two know each other?” exclaimed Jake and Zuko in tandem and Ray Ray let out a “cooooool, stereo.”

“Lao was one of my companions during the quest,” said Iroh and Lao held up his wrist to reveal a yellow gemstone Jake was CERTAIN was not there previously.

“Seems like everyone you know is from the Echo quests,” said Zuko, flopping down onto the couch. “So where’s June again?”

The girl in question squished in, thankfully booger free but dripping wet. “Oh great, you’re back,” she snarked. “I’m going up to my room to change.”

“Problems?” asked Jake, looking at Zuko who shrugged. “She doesn’t seem to like you.”

“I walked in on her changing,” said Zuko and Jake blinked rapidly. “In the bathroom.”

“More like teleported in,” said Iroh. “I thought Sokka had better aim than that.”

Zuko snorted and added, “Giving that Water Tribe idiot the power to create Space Folds was a bad idea.”
