The Worst Day Ever: Take Two

The title of this post is a bit of misnomer since I've long since cheered up from my frustrated self from this morning. Basically I went to see Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

From the get go, I knew I wasn't going to spend more than 6 bucks to see this movie, and it was a well worth 6 bucks. From the onset, when you go into a book adaptation movie, you're filled with anticipation and dread. Anticipation because fuckyeah, movie adaptation. And on the other hand, omg don't screw it up.

The opening sequence pans atop the Empire State Building, a fixture in the Jackson series in which Poseidon is talking with little brother, aka Zeus. Like any concerned family member, he's adamant that Percy had not stolen the lightning bolt. Right from the get go you're struck with a "fuck my life, they're not keeping you in suspense of who's kid he is." But then you realize: WHY? We have no reason NOT to know Percy is the son of one of the Big Three.

And thus starts the timer. Right off the bat you're introduced to Percy and then Grover and then Charon, the trainer. There's a footnote of Chronos which sadly they didn't get into this time around but will probably later on.

Right off the bat you're thrown into the Minotaur chase just outside Camp Half-Blood with a memorable line from Grover "Is it just me or is it raining cows?!" and the frantic chase, the "death" of Percy's mom and of course you're introduced to the rest of camp.

Here's where things get wiggy from a "Has Read the Novel" perspective. With the absence of many of the named campers, we're introduced to Luke and Annabeth. No Clarice in sight. There's a few Sons of Ares but that's a rather remarkable footnote in this movie as Percy is shown to the camp quarters, specifically the Poseidon Cabin. Yeah, no build up with the Hermes cabin, there really isn't any TIME. You're thrown into capture the flag and instead of Percy getting curbstomped by Clarice, you're getting him cut up by Annabeth. No shiny glowing glyph over his head, they don't need it. Everyone knows who the fuck this kid is.

The three major locations are then given to you; the emporium, the Parthenon and of course the Lotus Eaters lair. There's a rather big lack of the two kids from there that they briefly meet in the Lotus Eaters Lair but that's about it. And then it's off to San Fransisco, er, I mean, Hollywood. Yeah the entrance is between the emblematic sign. I KNEW Hollywood was the gate of evil.

And then it hits you like a truck: well isn't this a welcome subversion of tropage? With the absence of meeting with Hephaestus, you realize that HADES is das evil guy, and wanted the master bolt. And then Seph goes and blasts him with it. It was hilarious. So with Grover in the basement, the heroes escape, and subsequently use the pearls in order to warp directly to the top of the State Building. HANDY.

And just to shake up the order, Luke comes out of nowhere and a sky battle is fought, cumilating in some of the most Katara-esque Waterbending in the world. Props to it. The trident in the face was cool too. So they go to Olympus and Percy makes up with his dad.

And then the film ends with Percy's crappy Step-dad being Medusaed instead of a happy birthday sequence. It fills you with expectation for The Sea of Monsters simply because they left it WIDE open for all of those holes in the first movie's book-based plot to be filled, specifically Chronos. And without the threat of the Prophecy over his head, Percy doesn't need to worry. Yet.

In all I give this movie a 8/10. Can't give it full marks from a purely booklover perspective but if I were to give it a pure filmography, I'd go 10/10

On a side note, NGE: Nobody Dies just updated. This has the most crack I've ever seen in my life. Fist Bump FTW.
