For Once, not an ADS Post
The idea I had, the one that involved Avatar? Yeah, it's still here.
While the idea refuses to be shelved properly, I may as well give an idea of what I'm going for.
The idea is simple: taking a plot point from Buffy (yes I know, I'm going to FRY for that), I subsequently kill Aang via drowning 100 years ago for a split second. The Avatar State kicks in, saving his life. However the death manages to severely cock up the reincarnation line, and before the spirits can prevent it, a new Avatar is born. Two more follow in Aang's absence, leading up to the Fire Incarnation.
The war shifts around these two Avatars hence, and the Fire Nation tries to cover up the fact that there were two that had been incarnated. Hoping that they would be able to control the Avatar, the kingdom searched high and low for the next one, but found nothing. Assured that the chain was broken, the Fire Nation resumed the war, having devastated places with the war ending poorly for the Earth Kingdom during the last major offensive on the shores of the Fire Nation, resulting in the Earth Incarnation dying.
Cut to 6 years before Aang is woken up from his slumber in the iceberg as Chief Hakoda sends his children away to a friend who will keep them safe. The last thing the kids see is their village exploding into ash and soot. Sokka goes to learn the way of the sword with Master Piandao, and Katara stays in the small coastal village closest to the South Pole in the Fire Nation islands with the friend of the family. Forced even to take different names, Hua Mei (Katara) and Lee (Sokka) are always hoping that there will be a sign that the new Avatar will rise.
Katara also grew up with a girl in the Fire Nation, On Ji, and have friends in a small group of kids, all with Firebending powers still mostly underdeveloped. It's one of those nights that the pair discover on the beach that the iceberg holding Aang has floated there, and when they manage to crack the ice, Aang awakes.
Despite his confusion, Aang can only remember a few things from his long slumber as the act of dying for even a moment, has forced part of his spirit to continue the line of incarnations. He manages to learn a little about the Fire Nation and the war against the rest of the world, and sets out on a journey to find masters to teach him how to bend the elements. On Ji and Katara follow him, claiming that it is tradition for children of their age to journey on what is known as The Path of Fire, or rather a Firebender's Pilgrimage.
Aang then meets Sokka who is skeptical about his claim to being the Avatar. Aang then asks them to come with them to the Fire Temple, and they manage to gain entry disguised as acolytes and students on the pilgrimage. In the depths of the tower, On Ji and Aang are spoken to by Avatar Roku, who explains the natural course of the reincarnation cycle has been disrupted, and that On Ji, is part of a new cycle that begins with Avatar Aang.
With the looming threat of Sozin's Comet the next summer, Aang, Sokka, Katara and On Ji set out to find an Earthbending and a Waterbending teacher for them. Using contacts within the Order of the White Lotus, they slip through port after port unnoticed until an encounter triggers two simultaneous uses of the Avatar State. The results are catastrophic as On Ji is wild and untamed, while Aang's state is tempered by the extra guidance of the thousand of lives. It becomes readily apparent that the ability to control said state for the new line of Avatars requires finesse and control to master the enormous power without the skill.
The idea combines Iap's original idea of incarnating Kanna and then Toph into the new Avatar fic idea from so long ago, while taking some bits and pieces of influence from Akino's Fire Nation-based ficlet. Bring the pair of ideas together, it REALLY isn't my fault if more muses pop up from this. As it stands, this series is more or less a secondary priority, to work on during the time when I have no head for Power Rangers A.D.S.
