Star Ocean The Last Hope - First Impressions
The title of this entry is an actual misnomer. For instance, I've already given my first impressions to the glory that is AIM chat. However, for the sake of posterity, lets assume this is the first impressions.
As an action RPG set on vivacious and lush surroundings, filled with danger, giant bugs, items and sidequesting, Star Ocean is nothing more than pure sugar. While the story begins cinematically as most forays into the mystical worlds of Square-Enix, you quickly come to realize that this story is their magnum opus, Enix's trademark of pure amazing that has taken the best parts of Star Ocean 1 and 2 and 3. Yes even 3. Poor unloved 3.
You are quickly introduced to Edge Maverick, a young man who sports a name destined for gritty action and possible SquareEnix styled angst. His best friend and childhood friends are also introduced. Reimi Saionji who is less of The Chick than she is The Lancer, and Crowe, his rival and the cool guy who he is determined to surpass.
Some mythology touches are approached right off the bat. Commander "Lightspeed" Kenny, the hero who piloted the first successful Warp test and helped found the setting of this storyline is there, presumably the ancestor of Ronyx and Claude.
You bravely set forth after a round of cinematic glories which are surprisingly not that slow paced as SO2. However? As soon as you enter Warp, aka the Wormhole, everything is shot to hell.
And thus begins the rounds of landing on alien worlds.
Unlike Star Ocean 1, 2 and 3, you are not limited to just one world which is infested with giant jurassic bugs that are startling immune to railguns but not to swords. You get to zoom around to various other worlds, presumably because of the fact that you've been railroaded into capitancy of the Calnus which is, of course, ANOTHER nod to the SO mythology.
After escaping various situations, seeing things go boom, you are then introduced to the latest storyline homage of them all: hello Edge and Crew, welcome to the Planet Roak.
That's as far as I got till grandma kicked me off the television to watch her Taiwan Soaps.
My suggestion? Buy this sonufabitch and enjoy it.
