Ed Stuff

Ed’s history begins at a young age as he was raised alongside Alphonse his younger brother, and the Rockbell’s and their daughter Winry. His father, Hoenheim, left Trisha when the boys were young, and Ed’s always held it against him that he never returned before his mother died.

The boys studied alchemy, getting the basics and foundations of the skill when they started reading up on things in their fathers study. After transmuting a doll for Winry, a feat that scared the girl since she had no idea what was going on, Pinako Rockbell stated that they had quite the talent for alchemy.

Months later however, when their mother fell ill, it turned out that she had been keeping the sickness from the boys, and died, leaving them without a mother. Pinako took them in but Ed made a vow to use alchemy to return their mother to life. Pinako thought it was foolish, and there was a reason why no one attempted Human Transmutation, but Ed didn’t care.

Seeking out the help of an alchemist who was passing by during a flood, the boys became her students after surviving for one month on a island in the middle of the lake. There, they learned the lessons that would stick with them for life, as well as the following months would teach them the foundations of alchemy, as well as the rigors of physical hand to hand combat.

Confident, Ed and Al returned to their home and in the basement and began combining the items needed to construct a human body. But when they tried, something went horribly wrong. The Gate of Truth opened up and took Ed’s leg as well as Al’s entire body, and as a result, created a monster from the pile of materials. Ed sacrificed his arm in order to bind his brother to a suit of armor, and there his soul stayed, his body taken by the Gate.

Conversely due to their sacrifice given in the attempt, the result was a homoculus, an artificial soulless creature that was soon approached by Dante and fed philosopher stones to gain coherence and physical form as Al, bound in a suit of armor, had carried the bleeding Ed to Pinako who treated his wounds. Edward hadn’t noticed due to his trauma sustained, but having glimpsed the insides of the Gate, had been infused with the ability to cycle energy by putting his hands together and transmute, as well as gaining insight to what sort of energy the alchemists were cycling.

At the request of Ed, he was fitted for Automail, a long and painful surgical process that was “nothing compared to the pain Al was going through”. Together, after a year of rehab, Ed decided he would become a state alchemist due to Roy Mustang visiting the house when he was impaired.

The boys trained and studied, and soon made their way to Central. On the way, they came across a town where young girls were vanishing. It was soon discovered that the local alchemist Majhal was trying to soul alchemy the girls into puppets to look like his lost love. But so far sunk into his madness that when he died, he believed that the woman whom he loved was not standing in front of him. Slightly turned by that experience, the pair made their way to the train leading to Central. On orders from then Lt. Colonel Mustang, they encountered terrorists who were trying to force Central into their bidding by holding General Hakoda and his family hostage.

With the help of Maes Hughes and his men, Ed and Al retook the train and stopped Bald and his men from accomplishing their goals. Bald broke free when they arrived at Central, and Roy burnt his skin in order to keep him from attacking. Awed and stupefied at Roy’s declaration of it being a demonstration of skill in order to get the Generals approval into applying for the State Alchemist Exam, Ed and Al were shipped off to one of the top ranking alchemists in order to study and live at for a year.

Ed and Al passed the written exam with flying colors, but Al was forced to drop due to the possible medical examinations. Ed went on ahead with the help of Al backing him up. Late into the year, Ed and Al were invited for a birthday by Maes and his wife Glacier. But when Glacier went into labor, Maes left in order to find a doctor, leaving them to try and keep her comfortable. It was here where Ed discovered on a fluke that he could cycle energy with a clap of his hands. Hoping to discover the cause, they studied until the practical, in which Ed, during an emergency, transmuted a large unstable transmutation of a previous alchemist, and was admitted into the State Alchemists
.
During this time, Shou Tucker, the noted Chimera Researcher, was told that his recertification was coming up. Desperate, he combined his own daughter and the family dog into a talking chimera. Driven mad by his lack of success, Ed realized that Shou was a broken man for years, and desperation drove him to the edge. Trying to save Nina however, turned out to be a disaster as all that remained was an outline of a chimera.

Ed tried to give up his recent certification, upset that alchemy was used this way. But when forced by Roy to reconsider, he decided to wait. Winry came to visit and was kidnapped by Barry the Chopper. In the end, Ed used alchemy to stop him and Barry was taken away, leaving Ed in order to rest up.

His first order was to investigate the mining town of Youswell, an act that brought up the words “State Alchemist” in association with “Always for the people”. The story of Ed and Al spread across the land and people accepted him as he always fought for their rights.

Three years later, Ed and Al are still looking for the Philosopher’s Stone, often running into false leads and rumors. One of which is the arrival at the town of Liore, a happy and prosperous town which seems to boast a spiritual leader who has the power to perform miracles. Discovering that the leader is both crooked and a fake, Ed and Al prove to Rose that her leader is nothing more than an alchemist who is preying on their beliefs. Ousting him with a jury-rigged speaker phone, the people turned against the church, and the rebuilding began. Unknown to Ed and Al, the people began to bubble into civil war with the assistance of the then-unknown Homoculi.

Heading back, the pair ran into a town called Xenotime that was hosting “Ed and Al Elric” who were using alchemy to return the wealth of the town. But several disasters followed and they discovered a strange red water that was the source of the sickness in the town, as well as the source of the research. Ed and Al saved the town and were ordered back to Central as they and the Tringham brothers parted ways on a relatively good note.

Back in Central, Roy reminded Ed about the recertification as Al found yet another kitten to keep. During this time, information was slipped of an alchemist who did research on the stone, a Dr. Marcoh. But only with the name to go by and without the proper authorization to keep looking, Ed impulsively challenged Roy to a duel, something that was also partly over Al getting to keep the kitten and the dog who would soon be known as Black Hayate. Ed and Roy fought in the courtyard in front of a host of soldiers who had come, including the Furher himself who had always been interested in Ed’s ability. With the fight come to an end, Roy conceded along with Ed, and they were forced to repair the parade grounds.

Having tracked Marcoh down in a small Eastern Town, they discovered that Marcoh always regretted his actions and he pointed them in the direction of his hidden research. As the military came to detain the doctor, Scar appeared and killed the alchemist in charge before preparing to kill Marcoh. Ed and Al interfered and suffered the loss of their limbs and most of Al’s body before he was driven away into the sewers.

Before they can return to Central to follow their leads, the pair return to Risembool in order to get Ed’s arm fixed, and Al’s body repaired. Some hard lessons are learned that week and the pair decide to continu the search. Undeterred despite the library being burnt down, Ed and Al manage to find the research which is encoded. Days passed and Ed realized the entire code and the truth of the stones: they were made by human lives.

The pair head to Central Facility Lab 5 and there meet remains of the experiments done on prisoners in the human transmutation into stones, including Barry the Chopper who they had thought met his fate years ago. During this time, Ed discovers he had all the things he needed to make the stone, but refused to make it. But when his body touched the red water, alchemy run rampant and nearly killed several people.

After being rescued and Winry came to repair Ed’s arm and leg, Ed tried to convince Al that they were right. But Al, having no memory of the time before his transmutation, was convinced he could be just a copy and ran off. Ed tried to follow but was met with resistance. Eventually, Al and Ed were reunited, the brothers headed to Rush Valley, narrowly missing their teacher, Izumi Curtis.

Izumi, having learned of what Ed and Al have been up to, drags them back to York where they are thrown back onto the island to learn some of their lessons again. During this time, they met a boy who seems to be able to transmute his own body, and has legs and arms similar to the ones Ed lost years ago. When the military came and took him away, Izumi broke into South Command and fought everything to reclaim him. But the boy was captured by King Bradley himself, who turned out to be Envy who fed him the stones. The boy realized he was Wrath, and Izumi tried to kill him to atone for her sins but couldn’t.

Izumi sent Ed and Al to see her old teacher, a woman named Dante to learn the lessons she couldn’t impart on them herself. The pair head back, but are separated during an attack by Greed’s henchmen. Ed manages to find Al and fights Greed, but are captured and detained by Lt. Archer. The pair manage to escape and later manage to meet up with Winry who had stolen a tractor in order to help them escape from followers.

Ed and Al make their way in separate groups towards Liore in order to not attract attention. In Liore however, he confronted Scar who was dragging a large stone behind him. The stone was a large alchemy circle in order to transmute human lives into a stone. Reunited if only for a short time, Ed and Al escape the transmutation of the hundreds of soldiers into the stone which had imbued itself into Al’s metal body.

Together the pair flee to Risembool, and are intercepted by Roy’s men who tell them that they are on their side after all this time. Taking refuge in Pinako’s place, Ed and Al have a few words with their father, Hoenheim of Light. Hoenheim goes to confront the leader of the Homoculi and they learn the truth about what happened to Hughes. Desperate for answers, the boys tear into the Homoculi one by one with the assistance of Lust who was then killed later. Even fighting Sloth who wore the face of their mother and killing her kept Ed and Al going.

Envy kidnaps Al in preparation of using the stone for their own purposes as the Tringham boys give them a clue to what has been going on and where the Homoculi were based in. Ed and Roy told each other not to die, and they went to confront their respective targets. In the end however, Ed was sent through the gate, and wound up in his opposite’s body in London. Meeting up with Hoenheim, he told him to open the gate within himself to return to the world

Managing to wrest free of the gate, Ed fought Envy who revealed himself to be Hoenheim’s son from long ago before killing Ed. Envy then proceeded through the gate in order to chase down Hoenheim who lay on the other side. Al used his body as a sacrifice to reclaim Ed’s life from beyond the gate, and then Ed decided he needed to return Al to life by giving up his arm and leg, being pulled to the other side of the gate.

With Al returned to a blank slate before he was transmuted into the armor and Ed on the other side, the pair decide that they will do their best to see each other as Ed goes to study rocketry and Al returns to studying under Izumi Curtis.
