Shaun's Yuugiou Deck Help Desk #4!

Not much of a help list per say this time around but instead, we'll be looking at something Jae Kim likes to call New Grounds and use said format for this article.

Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys is an undoubtedly broken card, able to revive itself if it gets hit with anything ranging from Smashing Ground to an ill-timed Zaborg or even the little things such as a Torrential Tribute. Then it comes back and ravages the field with a built-in Heavy Storm effect. Dark Dusk Spirit, when summoned, flip summoned or flipped up can ravage the field, destroying all face up monsters on the field. Getting to see the pattern here? Good.

As Jason outlined on his article The Apotheosis a few weeks ago, Dark Dusk Spirit is insanely broken for this meta with more and more things being summoned face up as a shy away from using too many flip effects in order to fuel Flip-Flop or your basic average deck. Combined with the inherent power of Treeborn Frog, the overall effect is nasty beyond belief.

Monarch Control has also seen a viable upswing in play due to the use of more Mobius the Frost Monarch and Zaborg the Thunder Monarch. Grandmarg the Rock Monarch and Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch haven’t seen much play recently however so for the purposes of this deck and viable trade offs, we’ll be focusing on the first two monarchs.

So without further ado, I’ll get to today’s deck of the whenever, considering I do this regularly.

Orgy of Violence! - 41 cards

1 Dark Dusk Spirit
1 Cyber Dragon
1 Zaborg the Thunder Monarch
1 Mobius the Frost Monarch
1 Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys
1 Chaos Sorcerer
2 Magician of Faith
2 Apprentice Magician
1 Old Vindictive Magician
1 Hand of Nephthys
1 Treeborn Frog
1 Sangan
1 Tsukuyomi
1 Night Assailant
1 Mirage Dragon
2 Dekoichi the Battlechained Locomotive
1 Breaker the Magical Warrior
1 D.D. Warrior Lady

1 Heavy Storm
1 Premature Burial
1 Graceful Charity
2 Nobleman of Crossout
1 Metamorphosis
2 Fissure
1 Snatch Steal
1 Pot of Avarice
1 Mystical Space Typhoon
1 Swords of Revealing Light
1 Book of Moon

2 Sakuretsu Armor
1 Torrential Tribute
2 Bottomless Trap Hole
1 Call of the Haunted
1 Skull Lair

The mechanics of the deck are fairly simple, dig for a copy of Treeborn as soon as possible and then use it to fuel sacrifices like mad. Cyber Dragon serves as both a big monster and possible bait for reliably summoning Sacred Phoenix. Any more and it’ll serve as a dead draw, considering how the deck flows. Mobius and Zaborg should be used early- to mid-game, creating 2 for 1 exchanges to clear the opponents field of anything pesky that might nerf up your plans.

The big lynchpins in this deck however are the Dark Dusk Spirit and the Sacred Phoenix. While both on the field together is good, it’s also a bit of a double-edged sword since Phoenix won’t trigger if the Dusk Spirit kills it. Instead, trade off priority on using both at the same time. This deck isn’t built for super kill-you-now speed, more like clearing the field with a fell swoop and effect similar to Dark Hole.

The Apprentice Magician can dig out copies of Magician of Faith, Old Vindictive and even Hand of Nephthys. It also serves as bait for Chaos Sorcerer which should be used when Dusk Spirit is residing temporarily in the grave and waiting out the use of a Pot of Avarice.

Against certain match ups, this deck can be a godsend. Against Lockdown Burn, it has the chance to swing either way, using the multitude of mass-clearing to rid the field, but then again Burn isn’t commonly used in our regional meta.

Warrior Toolkit and Monarch Control decks can be hit fairly hard since they like to devote their resources using lynchpin cards like Reinforcement of the Army and multiple copies of Zaborg and Mobius. From there, you want to wait till they’ve devoted the field and then wipe it clean. Warrior Toolkit also likes to run multiple copies of Mystic Swordsman LV2 so the Skull Lair can be an excellent answer to it to stop it’s little murderous rampages.

Mirage Dragon can also cause an upswing in free hits when it’s on the field. Battle Phase trap activations are negated so the most one has to worry about is Book of Moon or Scapegoats, the former a little more of a threat than Goats since Book will turn Dragon face down and make their traps free-range again. If you can temper gameplay, you can easily put pressure on the opponent and make certain to attack freely while clearing the field quickly and often.
